As usual the James Fenimore Cooper Society will sponsor a three-paper Cooper Panel at the annual Conference of the American Literature Association.

Topic: Any aspect of the writings of James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851).

Length: 20 minutes (about 10 typed pages, double spaced).

Presentation: Must be presented in person by the writer (except for emergencies). Presenters may give only one paper at the Conference (though they may also chair a different panel).

Membership: Presenters at the Cooper Panel need not be members of the James Fenimore Cooper Society (though we hope they will join).

Follow-up: Papers presented will (with the presenter's permission) be published by the James Fenimore Cooper Society in its Miscellaneous Papers series, and subsequently be placed on-line with articles from previous conferences at the Cooper Society website at ALA Articles (http://www.oneonta.edu/external/cooper/articles/ala.html).

Procedure: Paper proposals should be sent to Society Secretary Hugh MacDougall, James Fenimore Cooper Society, 8 Lake Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326. They may also be e-mailed to the Cooper Society. There is no special format, but proposals should indicate what the paper will be about, and provide brief background information about the presenter. For any questions, contact Hugh MacDougall.

Deadline for Proposals: December 31, 2004. Proposals will be circulated to the Society Board, and three will be chosen on the basis of the Board's recommendations; we must advise ALA of final panel arrangements by January 30, 2005. Early submission of proposals is requested whenever possible, and will greatly increase your Secretary's Christmastide pleasure!!.

Registration: Presenters must pre-register for the Conference--$75 ($25 for Graduate Students, Independent Scholars, High School faculty, retired Faculty), which covers costs plus opening and closing receptions. Those registering before April 15, 2005, will receive a $20 food credit good at the hotel.
