Evening Program at HEP

The value of a high school diploma is enhanced when a student is able to access and use appropriate resources. HEP teaches Life Skills classes 2-3 evenings a week. Life skills classes provide a comprehensive array of supportive services and information to participants. Examples of some Life Skills classes are listed below.

Admissions- The college admissions department on campus sends a representative to do a presentation. Participants learn how to apply to college.

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)- This program is offered to participants who are financially and academically disadvantaged. A representative from the college explains what the EOP program can offer and how to apply to the program.

Department of Labor- Participants will learn about the Department of Labor and how it functions. Participants can then register with the Department of Labor and begin receiving services.

Military Services- Representatives from different branches of the military come to talk with participants and give an overview of the military and how to enlist.

Planned Parenthood- A representative from the clinic will give a presentation to participants. Participants may receive physicals and treatment for acute illness from the clinic.

Career Development- Participants are given an overview of the Career Development Center and how participants can utilize the services. A representative from the Career Development Office provides information to participants on how to find a career that fits their interest.

In addition to Life Skills classes, participants have opportunities to participate in job shadowing experiences to gain exposure to various careers. The program counselor provides individual and group counseling sessions and organizes college and group activities each week.

Multicultural activities are also part of the evening program. All participants have access to the college facilities and are encouraged to take advantage of various campus events. As a group, participants may attend plays, athletic events, movies, and other special events on campus. Going to these events helps participants build social skills among each other as well as with college students and community members.
