An Oneonta Concert Association Support Opportunity
These are tough economic times. And the poor economy has affected many organizations that present classical music.
Item: The 111-year-old Philadelphia Orchestra declares bankruptcy.
Item: The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra cancels the remainder of the 2010-11 season and suspends operations.
Item: The Louisville Orchestra files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
While we are not facing bankruptcy, the Oneonta Concert Association, like most other arts organizations, is facing a difficult situation in which government and business support has decreased. As a consequence of this we have been dipping into our "rainy day fund" to present concerts for the 2008-09, 2009-10, and 2010-11 seasons. We cannot continue to do this; this fund is limited and we have a fiduciary responsibility. We cannot save money by cutting personnel or salaries; we are an all volunteer organization -- no one on the board of directors is paid and we have no employees. Since roughly 85% of our budget goes toward artists' presentations we could reduce costs by engaging performers of lesser repute; we shall not do this. We could present fewer concerts; we'd rather not do that. We have instituted a modest increase in subscription and individual ticket prices to boost revenue for the 2010-11 and future concert seasons. Currently, the gate covers less than 40% of our budget. We do recognize that increased fees will be a burden for some, but not for others. Keeping in mind the former group, we have made only modest increases in charges. On the other hand, we are asking the latter group (and anyone else so moved) to make a voluntary -- tax deductible to the extent allowed by law -- contribution to the Oneonta Concert Association.
If this philanthropic appeal has struck a responsive chord, you can make a donation
- by writing a check to Oneonta Concert Association and mailing it to Oneonta Concert Association, PO Box 244, Oneonta, NY 13820, or
- by charging a donation to your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) via the Razoo non-profit network (you do not have to be a Razoo member to make a donation): http://www.razoo.com/story/Oneonta-Concert-Association.
We are partnering with Razoo because (a) they take care of the "paperwork" and send us your donation and (b) they cover the vendor cost of the use of the credit card; in other words 100% of your donation will reach us. For more information about Razoo: http://www.razoo.com/. (Unfortunately, we cannot accept credit card based ticket subscriptions via Razoo; they will only accept donations.)
