This country’s most distinguished brass ensemble, the American Brass Quintet seeks to promote brass chamber music as a serious chamber music medium. Founded in 1960, the ABQ musicians continue to enlarge the repertoire for brass quintet by unearthing earlier music, commissioning, performing, and recording new works for brass quintet. ABQ’s 2007-2008 season collaborates with Grammy-winning pianist/composer Billy Childs in a special program featuring his new work for brass quintet and piano. Programs will also include commissions by Joan Tower and David Sampson. The New York State Music Fund has underwritten the commission for the Billy Childs’ piece and also partially supports its performance in the 2007-2008 season within New York State.
