Norway Hook Dec 11th 1861

Dear Mother

Here I am away up in the North Woods 40 miles from any place at all. Left Utica yesterday at half past ten and went to Herkimer and then started for Norway on foot, which is about 18 miles. Harington myself and two others came all the way on foot and ten or twelve more on the Stage. The reason that we left Utica was becaus the landlord got drunk and abused us so that we could not stand it any longer. We are going into the woods next week to stay all the week shall go in about 30 miles for the purpose of hunting deer if I am lucky enough to kill one I will send you a quarter for Christmas dinner. I have nothing more to say at present. You had not better write until you hear from again.

Your Aff Son
