Harrisons Landing VA August 14th 1862
Dear Mother
We have been waiting all the week to get off but have not made a raise yet
have been expecting to go since Sunday noon all the knapsacks and blankets
were put on board the boats Sunday afternoon I think some of the boys will
want their blankets before they see them again. I did not have any blanket
but have a good overcoat that I found so I am all right for all the cold
weather we shall have right away. I think that the Peninsula is going to be
evacuated entirely. I learned to day that our forces were mounting wooden
guns on the earth works out in front. Every thing looks so mysterious that
it is impossible to tell what we are going to do or which way we are going.
I think if Pope had been driven back we should have been up there with him
by this time but as it is I do not think we shall hurry up very fast, but
when we do go I think we shall go up that way some wheres. There has been a
great deal of Artillery shipped from here within the last week and there
has some troops gone too. We confissicated some fresh beef this forenoon
and I made a pot pie for dinner it was just as good a one as I ever saw do
not think you could beat it. I wish you would send me a recpt for making
batter pudding. Think I will try that one of these days if I can get the
necessary articles. I have made nut cakes short cakes pan cakes and pot
pie. Now I want to try some thing else for I have had good luck with all of
them. I got the package of Tea and letter the other night. The tea is first
rate. We have not got the box yet and probably will not untill we get
settled down again. I saw the names of the men that have enlisted in New
Berlin. They are the ones that should have Enlisted a year ago. Tell Gust I
will answer his letter pritty soon. How does Libbie get along with the baby
Has she been home with it yet. Remember me to Mrs Whitney and Annie. Cant
think of anything more now
Your Aff Son,
CJ Hardaway
