Arlington Heights Sept 11th 1862
Dear Mother
I received your kind letter night before last and also the long looked for
box the same night. Every thing came verry nice with the exception of some
cake that was not properly put up. The cheese was spoiled entirely all
rotten inside. There was a fruit cake directed to Jno Bigg Henry Williams
and myself that kept verry nice I think it must have come from Mrs. Brown I
wish you would thank her for me for it as I am the only one of the three
that is left here now Jno Biggs is in the Hospital at New York. I got the
magazines all right you will please thank Annie for them now and I will
acknowledge them myself when I feel well enough. The Regiment marched over
into Maryland this morning and I have been obliged to stay behind for the
first time. I have got the rheumatism in the back and hips so that I cant
stand up nor lay down. The doctor we have got dont know as much as a
yearling bull. I shall try and get in some hospital if I can. I have come
pritty near crying a dozen times this morning but have made up my mind that
it wont help any so I shant do it. I hope they will bring this war to a
close pritty quick. I dont care much which side whips we should be about as
well off one way as the other. You enquire about Bennjah he is all right.
He is driving team and does not find much time to write now adays for the
teams are kept pritty bussy all the time. Young Hormwood is in the Hygiene
hospital at Fortress Monroe. I guess he is all right. I cant write any more
now my back aches so
Your Aff Son
