Sharpsburg Oct 18th 1862
Dear Mother
We have at last got a mail here by waiting two weeks. I got your letter
dated the 9th. You ask if I ever got a letter from William Angells people.
I never did. The clothing that was sent to him was given out in the company
so that nothing was wasted. A great many of the boys were badly in need of
clothing at that time. I am sorry that you sent my shirts now for I am not
really in need of them at present but it is all right I guess I can get
along with them. You ask what I think about selling the lots in Utica. I
think it is well enough to sell them but I think that Burrows is making
more money out of the operation than anyboddy else. I may be wrong in
saying so but I have not much confidence in mankind. I think everyboddy
needs a little watching even if you are pretty sure they are honest. There
was quite a force crossed the river day before yesterday on a reconnoisance.
They went out about ten miles and drove the rebels as they went, but when
came up with the main boddy, they found out that the enemy had got in their
rear so all they had to do was to throw out skirmishers and skirmish back
to the river. They came back last night about midnight feelling rather
queer. I think they are alltogether to smart for us in everything. I have
not heard from Harrington yet do not know what to think of it. We are in a
very healthy place now and all the boys are feeling first rate and are
getting as fat as pigs. There has been four discharged from our company
within two weeks so all that we have got left now are pretty sound. Have
not had any pay yet and cant tell when we shall get it. I hope pretty soon
though. There is nearly four months due us now. Can't think of any thing
more to write about now
Your Aff Son
