Dear Mother
It is just one year today since I left home and I think I am seeing harder
times than I ever saw before. We started from Warrenton last Munday in the
rain and it has rained every day and night since. My clothes and blankets
have been wet through all the time. It has not rained any now for about two
hours and I have got partly dried. I am all out of Tobacco and money and no
prospect of getting any more for a good while dont know what I shall do.
Can you send me some dont think you can for I cant get any mail. Think I am
pretty hard up dont you think so They say that we cant have any winter
quarters yet a while. I think we could do just as well in good winter
quarters as we can tramping around in the mud up to our knees. They say
that McClellan was removed because he proposed going into winter quarters
it may be all right but I cant see it, in that light. We have tramped back
over the same road that we went up on last August. It would not be much of
a wonder if we had to go back up there again and have another battle at
bull run. As near as I can find out the rebs ocupied Warrenton the same day
that we left. There was firing there shortly after we left and I presume
they overtook our rear guard. Old Abraham has got his hands full and the
quicker he makes a compromise the better it will be for him. You never can
lick the buggers out. Thats a sure thing. If you can read this letter you
can do a great deal better than I can, so I think I might as well stop
here.
Your Aff Son
