Camp Near Fredericksburg April 19th 1863 Dear Mother The army has not mooved yet. Neither have I. I have sent in two or three applications for discharge but have not been successful yet. There was a note on my last paper when it came back saying that I must address the Adjutant Genl at Washington. So I have made out another one and sent it to him. It will probably take a week or two to hear from it. I think I shall be successful in the End. I think I will never try to get through any more red tape after I get done with this. It is a great deal harder work than it is to plough that stony Green Sward up home and I would willingly change places with any one there. We have been under orders all the week to moove at any moment with Eight days rations 5 in knapsack and three in haversack. Hooker is making pack mules of his men. They do not allow them to carry any Blankets nor tents. We received four months pay the other day. I shall not send any home right away unless I find out for certain that I can not get away from here. I wrote to Foote yesterday to send me a certificate from the Colonel that there was a vacancy there. So I think I shall get around some time this Summer. I cant think of much more to write about now. I hope you will keep writing just the same as usual for I shall be home some time yet. Please remember me to all the Good people at home. Your Affectionate Son Cyrus J Hardaway |
