Near Fredericksburg VA May 17th 1863 Dear Mother This has been a verry quiet day for Sunday and I have had two or three good long naps. The regiment is all out on picket so there is no noise in camp at all. Everything is verry dull here now. No signs of a move yet and I dont think we shall move for some time yet. There are a great many regiments going home now three or four every day. If Hooker could not whip the "rebellious cusses" with what men we had in the last battle. We certainly can not do it now after loosing so many men. There will be about sixty regiments to leave here and some of them verry large ones. We have not had any mail here for a number of days. I cant immagine what the reason is. I sent Sommers my warrant the other day. I hope he has got it all right. I think it is nearly time that I had a letter from Foote. If I do not get anything satisfactory from there, I think it will be well enough to see the Governor about it. The weather is verry warm here now and the dysentery has commenced to show itself considerable. The men dread it about as much as they do the bullets. I sent some papers home by Charl Beardslee just to show you what I had to go through with. if you get them please save them for they may be of some use to me yet. Cant think of anything more to write about now. Your Affectionate Son Cyrus J. Hardaway Mrs Jesse Beardslee Please send me a few postage stamps |
