Bull Run Battle Field June 16th 1863

Dear Mother

Since I wrote last we have been changing around some. We left camp at Falmouth last friday night. We have marched about 80 miles in three days and a half, it has been the hardest marching that we have ever done. Have not seen any rebels yet only across the river at raccoon ford when we were on picket. We are lying now in the rebels old rifle pits waiting for them to come up, but I hardly think they will come here this time if they attack us in the position that we have now I think they will get badly whipped. The weather is verry hot and dry. There was about a hundred men in our corps died of Sun Stroke yesterday, ten out of our regiment. The boys in our company are all right this morning. Smith Haight came near getting down yesterday. The bottoms of my feet are all blistered so that I can hardly walk but I have managed to keep up so far. We hear this morning that Jackson's old corps made an attack on Harpers Ferry yesterday and got cleaned out. I hope it is so. I got a letter from Foote the day we started from camp saying that my affairs were all right down there. The Col had sent a Certificate of Vacancy but put it in another envelope. I shall probably get in the next mail. We have not had any mail since we started on the march. I expect we shall be at Washington about tomorrow night and then I will write again

Your Affectionate Son
