Dear Mother

They have got me fairly in the traces once ore and I have got plenty to do, in fact I am working harder than I ever have before since I have been a Srgen. The day that I got to the regiment Foote was appointed to act as Brigade Q.M. and as there was noboddy else the Colonel appointed me as actg Q.M. for the regt I like it full as well as I shold in the ranks although there is a great deal more to do. We staid at N Orleans untill yesterday noon and then took the cars for this place. I had to work untill half past three last night to get my stuff off the cars. I have not got any horse yet but have engaged a nigger to steal one for me the first opportunity. I suppose we shall start for Texas in a few days, and it is going to be a long march. I have met nearly all the officers of the regt and like them very well so far. I have packed up my sword with the rest of our traps and am going to send them back to N Orleans. I hope it will not get taken as Foote's did. If it should the people of N.B. would get tired of furnishing swords I am afraid. I can not write much for I am bussy all the while now that we are on the move. Let me hear from you often.

Your Affectionate Son
